3G MUGA Installation
Brief:
We were tasked with upgrading the surface and drainage of the existing MUGA sports pitch, along with enhancements to the perimeter fencing and lighting systems.
What we did:
A specialist contractor removed the existing artificial grass layer and shock pad, exposing the original tarmac surface, which revealed several defects. Due to the site’s high-risk classification, we implemented mitigation measures. SACX invited a specialist UXO officer to the site to monitor all excavation activities in case of unexploded ordnance. The existing fence line was removed, and trenches were dug around the perimeter to lay new cables for the upgraded lighting systems. Concurrently, a large soakaway was excavated as per the designer’s specifications to improve surface drainage. Our sports surfacing specialists made adjustments to the tarmac substructure to ensure compliance with FIFA guidelines. Additionally, two new dugout areas were constructed with tiered seating, along with new boot cleaners, sports dividing nets, and upgraded goals.
Challenges overcome:
The substructure was not as expected, requiring additional excavation and resurfacing in certain areas. During excavation, work was temporarily halted when the team discovered what was initially believed to be an unexploded bomb, which turned out to be an unexploded mortar. All necessary precautions were taken, and the device was safely removed from the site.
Outcome:
The project resulted in a fully upgraded, top-of-the-line 3G MUGA sports pitch.
