HV Substation Installation

Brief:

The project involved upgrading and relocating an existing substation to meet the increased power demands of a newly constructed building.

What we did:

Sacx served as the principal contractor, executing all works using our in-house HV, LV, and Civils teams.

We installed a new substation adjacent to the live, operational substation. This included performing all civil works and groundworks, such as installing new security fencing and surface water drainage.

Our HV team diverted the existing HV ring into a new Schneider RMU while ensuring continuous power to critical areas of the site. Additionally, we installed a new earth nest, positioned an 800kVA Schneider Transformer on a Sanergrid bund, and connected it to a new 1600A Schneider SAIF Feeder Pillar with Load Shedding capabilities. The team also re-fed the existing LV feeder pillar within the current substation.

Challenges overcome:

The proximity to the existing live substation posed a significant challenge. We had to ensure that all excavation and installation methods were both safe and practical, minimising the risk to live services and maintaining uninterrupted operation of the site’s HV network.

Furthermore, the location’s proximity to a live runway and taxiway required careful coordination. Special attention was given to ensure our lifting operations did not interfere with flight schedules, ground manoeuvres, or FOD (Foreign Object Debris) risks.

Outcome:

The project was successfully completed ahead of the new building’s finalisation, ensuring the site was ready for power connections and commissioning by others.
