ULEV Charging Installation

Brief:

The UK Government’s “Road to Zero” strategy aims for 25% of central government departmental fleet vehicles to be electric by 2022, increasing to 100% by 2024. In line with this initiative, RAF Wittering required the installation of charging stations to support the charging needs of MOD vehicles on the station.

Sacx was commissioned to install Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) charging stations for estate users, adhering to the DIO’s standards and specifications.

What We Did:

As the main contractor, Sacx carried out the full scope of works, including all preparatory onsite work such as site stripping and the demolition/removal of existing hard standings.

We completed all Civils work, which involved installing underground ductwork, foundations, and various access boxes. New pathways and line markings were created around the charging stations to facilitate access and clearly mark the EV charger areas.

Our team also handled the electrical installation, including a new sub-main connection to the local DSS, the installation of a specialised bespoke feeder pillar, and eight new dual-ability charging stations—providing 16 charging points for electric service vehicles. Additionally, local bollard lighting was installed along the pathways and near the charging points.

Challenges Overcome:

Due to the site’s historical background, several unknown services were discovered during excavation. This required minor adjustments to the design layout, as well as the use of vacuum excavation methods to prevent any accidental damage to existing services.

Outcome:

The project was completed on time and within budget. RAF Wittering’s strategic location means that the newly installed charging points serve as a convenient mid-point for electric vehicles on longer journeys. Given that the current fleet of service vehicles includes those with 50kW (200-mile range) batteries, these new chargers offer significant operational benefits to Defence establishments in the North, East, and South. RAF Wittering is also ideally situated for easy access to Lincolnshire’s Main Operating Bases and HQ Air.
